About Mr Andrea Bille
Current practice
Mr Andrea Bille has over two decades of experience in the field of cardiothoracic surgery. He offers specialist advice and support, from a personalised diagnosis to highly tailored treatment. His understanding and experience help him deliver a compassionate approach to lung care, and Mr Bille is committed to ensuring you receive the best possible treatment at every stage.
You can book an appointment to see Mr Bille through his private practice with HCA UK, and he also looks after NHS patients at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. He’s proud to be an Honorary Senior Clinical Reader at King’s College University in London since 2021, helping to pass on his knowledge to the next generation of surgeons.
Expertise
Since 2015, he’s performed over 5,000 thoracic surgical procedures, using a minimally invasive approach in nearly 90% of cases. Those surgeries treated thoracic malignancies, such as lung cancer, thymoma, mesothelioma and mass lesions in the mediastinum. Mr Bille also treats benign conditions, including thoracic endometriosis, pneumothorax, thoracic outlet syndrome and hyperhidrosis.
With a focus on robotic, minimally invasive surgery, Mr Bille, together with his team, has successfully performed over 1,800 robotic procedures.
He has also performed advanced surgeries for complex thymoma and mediastinal tumours, both of which require vascular reconstruction and extensive resection.
Career
After qualifying in 2005 from the University of Turin, Mr Bille trained in cardiothoracic surgery in Italy and at Guy’s Hospital, London. That included undertaking a clinical fellowship focusing on mesothelioma surgery and minimally invasive thoracic surgery.
In 2013, he started as a consultant at the National Cancer Institute in Milan, specialising in the surgical treatment of lung cancers, thoracic sarcomas and mediastinal tumours. These all require skills in extensive resection and complex reconstruction, which means that today he can help more patients by operating on even the most advanced conditions.
In 2014, he became a clinical fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre (ranked as the leading cancer centre in the USA), training in thoracoscopy and robotic surgery, with complex reconstruction for extensive thoracic malignancies. In 2015, he also completed his PhD on surgical treatments for mesothelioma.
Publications
Mr Bille’s specialism in cardiothoracic surgery means that he’s published extensively and presented at conferences worldwide. He also contributes to the thoracic section of the Tumori Journal and the Journal of Thoracic Disease as an associate editor.
He’s involved in several research projects on lung cancer, thymoma and mesothelioma worldwide. This research helps Mr Bille to continue exploring the evolving role of surgery and how it can deliver better health outcomes for patients with lung conditions.
